Theme 1: Significant Methodological Contributions This requirement has many facets. A particularly important one is that it is necessary for an author to demonstrate the "value-added" contrihution of an article to the field. This can be accomplished hy, for example, showing how a chosen method generates knowledge that previous, traditional methods didn't (or couldn't) or by showing that the choice and use of a particular method helps move knowledge about a particular management content domain further along. It is insufficient to simply take a "hot" methodological topic or technique and produce a primer with a weak substantive example or to State (or overstate) the contribution of the chosen technique without convincingly testing its power against alternative methods. At the same time, application of a new technique should avoid replicating any problems that the new methodological approach is thought to resolve. Articles also need to demonstrate a substantial advancement in knowledge. In addition, they need to provide a convincing demonstration that increased attention to the issues raised reduces the probability of committing particular types of errors. Further, manuscripts should provide clear familiarity with the general domain of the research approach. Theme 2:Adequate Conceptual Grounding Although the focus of this special research forum was on methods, methodological innovations should rest on adequate conceptual foundations. Articles that emphasize importing a method from another discipline need to demonstrate an adequate understanding of the complexities of the substantive themes in both the original discipline and management as well as an adequate understanding of the assumptions underlying the techniques. Further, the epistemological assumptions of an article need to be sufficiently comprehensive and accurate for the methodological approach being used. The methodology cannot seem disembodied or unrelated to underlying conceptual issues. The purpose of the method needs to be clear, with authors stating what hypotheses or research questions the approach will address. Finally, the approach should not be inappropriately narrow in its conceptual or statistical assumptions: it should not, for example, fall on one or another side of a paradigmatic debate that the method is attempting to transcend. Theme 3: Adherence to Methodologically Sound and Accurate Strategies It is difficult to make new methodological contributions. There are a large number of components to attend to, such as defining and measuring constructs, linking hypotheses and testing procedures, and adequately discussing the reliability and validity of the measures employed. The description of the methodology needs to be sufficiently thorough that a reader can discern the significance of the intended contribution. Further, authors must pay adequate attention to sampling, addressing both potential bias and sample size. The rationales for the given methodological innovation being proposed also need to be thoroughly stated. Finally, innovations need to reflect a full comprehension of all the nuances and underlying assumptions of the derived or adopted technique.
